Employee Spotlight: Steve Smith

Category: Spotlights

Steve Smith has been one of the main faces of our Crozet paint department for several years now, since we first established ourselves as a Benjamin Moore store, and is definitely an expert on the subject. He also manages our Hunter Douglas window treatment sales as well as flooring and carpeting, so you could say is a jack of all trades here at BRBS. Get to know him better in his spotlight interview below!

What do you like most about your job at BRBS? “The people I work with and meet, and the new challenges that I run into. Every day is different so the repetitive work that most people have to deal with, is not present here.”

Describe your journey at BRBS. “I started almost 17 years ago stocking shelves. Since the winter months slowed down repairing houses on Wintergreen and the bills didn’t stop, I had to find a reliable inside job, and I ended up here. I was used to coming here anyways to get materials, and one day when I was asked what I need needed, I replied, a job! About a year after starting here, we took on Benjamin Moore paints. The paint business picked up, since Sampson was the prior paint company around here, which isn’t exactly popular. There was need for more people in the paint department and here I am years later.”

Describe “a day in the life” of your job. What do you do in a typical day? “A day in the life of my job consists of tinting paint, color matching paint, troubleshooting paint problems and giving recommendations for paint projects. I also take care of the flooring and Hunter Douglas window treatments, which means I also have to leave the store almost every day to go out a measure, then make calls to sales reps to get the best price for my customers. Anyone that thinks being a salesman or saleswoman is simple or a piece of cake is sadly mistaken, It isn’t always peaches and cream. Not only do you have to take time to help the customers but you also have to deal with the angry ones when things don’t work out the way they’re supposed to.”

What are a few of your favorite hobbies outside of work? “I love to golf when the weather is nice, not sure if working on the house qualifies as a hobby, but I do a lot of that too. Toying/modifying my car is also fun as well as taking the four wheeler through the trails behind the house. Occasionally you’ll find me down at the lake doing some fishing, never been big on hunting, but I do like shooting stuff and eating deer meat, just never put those two together.”

What is your favorite movie, TV show, or book? Favorite musician or music genre? “Favorite movie: The Crow; Favorite TV show: Game of Thrones; Favorite Band: Incubus/Outcast; Music: Genre: just about anything.”

Where is your favorite place to visit or vacation to take? “Since my wife is from Florida, I enjoy visiting the in-laws and fishing in the Gulf.”

Describe your family. “I have been married for 19 years now. We have one son and a daughter that didn’t make it. Two dogs and four fish. At one point we also had three cats.”

What is your biggest goal for the next 5 to 10 years at BRBS? “My biggest goal at Blue Ridge is to expand the paint dept. to the point where we need a bigger area and more personnel.”

Name 3 words you would use to describe what BRBS means to you. “Reliable, enjoyable, family”

What is at the very top of your bucket list? “I would like to visit the Swiss Alps one day. My wife lived in Switzerland for thirteen years and I would love to see where she grew up.”

What is something most people don’t know about you? “I spent eight years as a line/grill cook, then the next eight years framing/remodeling houses.”

What is one thing you’ve learned about yourself since working at BRBS? “Being a good salesman is tougher, more stressful than it seems!”

If you could go back to when you first started your job, what is one piece of advice you would give your past self? “Buy a house closer to work!!!”

What is your motto in life? “It doesn’t cost you one cent to PAY ATTENTION!”

Is there anything else you’d like to add about yourself? “If you want to know more about me, come buy some paint and we’ll talk!”
